Car Insurance Saturn (Car Insurance). How likely is it that I could have done permanent damage to my car?How likely is it that I could have done permanent damage to my car? So I bought a car that was running ver low on oil. It was running fine when bought it, and the mechanic said I could drive home and when I got a chance take it to him and get the oil changed. So I was planning on doing that, except my car's battery died, and it wouldnt start. I jump started it yesterday, and I heard a knocking sound comming from the engine, similar to the noise diesel cars make. Since I had jump started the car, Iet the engine run for 10 minutes parked in my garage, however, I did not revv it beyond 2000 RPMs and didn't drive it. I have asked about this already, and I have been told it could be a rod knock, I looked what that was online and basically shattered me in pieces to find out it's such a big problem. I just bought this car for school and dont have money to buy a new engine or buy a new car. I am hoping and praying to God that I can solve this problem by putting new oil in and using one of those Lucas additives. I was wondering, since I didnt revv the car too much, could the engine have been damaged badly? I am hoping to get at least 50K miles more, at least to make the car worht what I paid. It has 88K miles and it is a 2003 mitsubishi eclipse 2.4 L 4 cylinder. thanks The missing piece of the puzzle in the previous question was the history - that you had recently bought it. That explains a lot, including the odd sound and the sudden appearance of the knock. It is a very good bet that the seller knew the engine had a rod knock and added something to the oil to temporarily mask it, long enough to sell it. It is an old and despicable trick. If it is a rod knock, no amount of oil or additives will fix it. A rod knock is caused by either a cracked rod, or excessive movement in the rod bearing. Running it at all could cause more damage, but if it is a rod knock, the engine is going to need a rebuild any way. You can rebuild it (or maybe even buy a used engine) relatively cheaply if you do your own work. maybe you know someone who could help you out with that? Any way, without actually hearing it for myself, I couldn't tell you if it is a rod knock or not. Best of luck to you! impossible to say what it is without a personal check. it could be a valve, a rod or piston. you should not have bought the car without a mechanic test. you will need to get it towed to a garage and have it checked. big bucks will be needed. running it while knocking was a bad choice. does your state have a lemon law? Kyle, I know it's water under the bridge at this point, but why didn't you or your "mechanic" put some oil in the engine before you drove it ...and certainly why didn't you after you got it home in your garage? once you spin a bearing then you put anything you want in it and it won,t fix it. 9 times out of 10 once a bearing spins it can scar the crank. if that,s the case then all you need is a set of bearings and another crank, but you will have to pull the engine to put another crank in. ok try this. drain the oil, drop the oil pan and pull the bearing caps off the rod bearings. if the crank is scared then you don,t need to go any farther. Saturn . How to Remove an Oil Pan on a RangerYour Ford Ranger is a durable vehicle. The oil pan on your Ford Ranger holds your engine oil as it is circulated through the engine by the oil pump. The circulation of oil through your Ranger's engine is necessary to keep the engine from overheating. Over time your oil pan can sustain damages or even leaks. If this happens you can replace your own pan. In order to replace your pan, though, you will have to remove the old one first. Difficulty:Moderate Instructions Things You'll Need Jack Jack stands Socket set Drain pan Flathead screwdriver Step by Step : 1 Place your Ranger in neutral and jack up the front end. Place the jack stands under your front frame and lower your Ranger onto them. 2 Loacte the oil pan on your Ranger. Exact location may vary with different year of Rangers, but generally, the oil pan is located dead center near the front axle. 3 Remove the drain plug from your Ranger with a socket set. Allow all the oil to fully drain out into your drain pan. Replace the drain plug once all of the oil has drained out. 4 Locate the retaining bolts that are located around the perimeter of your oil pan. There are approximately 24 bolts. However, that number may vary with different years. 5 Remove all the oil pan retaining bolts. Pry your oil pan open and off with a flathead screwdriver. Tips & Warnings Removal of your oil pan will also give you direct access to your Ranger's oil pump.
Saturn . How to Repair a Mercury 40hp Water PumpThe water pump on your Mercury 40hp motor is a workhorse. The job of an outboard water pump is to pump in water and distribute it throughout various parts of your motor. This keeps your motor from overheating. If your water pump goes, you can either replace it with a new one or try to repair it. The most common piece that breaks on outboard water pumps is the impeller. The impeller is a fan-shaped piece located inside your water pump. It is responsible for drawing outside water in and then actually channeling it back into parts of your engine to cool. Difficulty:Moderate Instructions Things You'll Need Socket set Flathead screwdriverSuggest EditsItem AddWhy is it necessary?Done Step by Step : 1 Remove the negative cable from your outboard Mercury 40hp water pump's battery. 2 Remove the bolts that hold the upper and lower units of your Mercury 40hp together. Get a good hold on the lower unit as you loosen it and remove the final screws so that the lower unit does not fall. The bolts can be removed with a socket set. 3 Lay the lower unit on a work bench or other flat surface and remove the four retaining bolts that clamp your water pump down in place on the drive shaft. Slide the water pump up and off of the drive shaft. Use a flathead screwdriver if necessary to remove the top of the water pump, which will reveal the impeller. 4 Push the old impeller out or work it loose with a flathead screwdriver. Slide the new impeller in and replace the top of the water pump. 5 Slip the retaining bolts through the holes on the water pump casing. Align them with the mounting area on the drive shaft and tighten them down completely. 6 Re-connect your lower unit to the upper unit. Replace your negative battery cable. The total costs should be repeated in the Totals column. 0 Totals: All the charges in the previous sections are repeated and totaled in this column. You pay the final figure. In addition, every invoice should have a space for 0 a written estimate and 0 a number where you can be reached if necessary. You'll be asked to sign the estimate. Be sure to read the small print above 0 the signature line before you sign. The small print should cover only your approval of the estimate and the fact that you're willing to allow the technicians to drive your vehicle in order to test, diagnose, and repair it. The reverse side of the invoice often contains information about the shop's warranty and the mechanic's lien, which allows service facilities in some states to sell your vehicle if you refuse to pay for services. For this reason, if a dispute occurs, you should always pay your bill and then seek restitution. As I mentioned earlier, credit cards really come in handy in these situations. To get satisfaction, be sure to read the section called "Complaining Effectively," later in this chapter. Saturn . How spark plugs produce high voltage?

You should aim for "most favored customer" status. Once you've discovered an outstanding automotive shop, the ball is in your court when it comes to establishing a good and lasting relationship that will have them going out of their way to make you happy. Even though most small businesses are struggling to stay alive these days, a good independent ser vice facility is an exception. Every outstanding one that I've encountered has had more business than time to deal with it. .Chapter 22: When All Else Fails: Finding and Dealing with a Good Mechanic A EQ Saturn . 18 gauge is how thick - 0478 inch?
